1:1 learning
The Unicorn School uniquely provides daily intensive 1:1 teaching for every child with their own personal qualified dyslexia teacher. For most children, the focus will be on improving reading skills, spelling skills and study skills. Every child has a way of learning best; some are highly visual, some are musical and love sound, some can learn rules - most cannot.
While fundamentally devoted to a Sound System approach to teaching reading, the individual teacher adapts their teaching to suit the child’s learning style and to enable the child to make meaningful progress in areas of greatest difficulty. The children love their 1:1 lessons and really appreciate the progress they make.
Dyscalculic children may have additional maths 1:1 lessons as well. Brightly coloured and tactile maths equipment is helpful in establishing the foundation of number sense and acquisition of the basic concepts such as time, money, fractions etc
Severely dyspraxic pupils will follow a programme of exercises with their 1:1 teacher devised in conjunction with an occupational therapist.
The 1:1 teacher is always in close contact with parents over progress and homework tasks and also acts as a mentor for the child
